ABALONE SHELLS HEALING
Healing Properties of Abalone Shell
Holding a piece of abalone shell may make you feel: love, beauty,
gentleness, caring, comfort, peacefulness, delight, solace, sand, water.
Abalone Shell has the colors of the ocean in it, blues, greens, purples and
yellows. It is soft to the touch from repeated tumbles in the sand and
water. It has slight ripples on it like the patterns left in the sand as the
waves lapse over it. It is comforting to hold it and rub the softness like
you would a worry stone. People are instantly taken with its beautiful
colors. To look at it brings me instantly to the ocean. For those of you who
have never been to the ocean, buy a piece of it, and bring a little piece of
the ocean to you.
Abalone shell is used for patterns of liver heat with such symptoms as headache, dizziness, spasms of the limbs, and various conditions of the eyes.
Abalone strengthens the structure of the body
and the functions of the heart chakra. Both pearl and abalone shell hold the
same divinatory meaning:
Shells are made up of calcium carbonate and grow in the ocean, forming part
of a living ecosystem. Various types of shell have been used as gems for
centuries. One of these types include those made up of pearly layers: mother
of pearl, abalone and New Zealand paua.
Abalone shell has been used in many cultures as a decorative jewelry and for
carvings. A disc of abalone shell is worn on the forehead of Apache girls as
they greet the sun in the morning of their initiation into womanhood.
Intimately connected to the sea - represents the tides of emotion
An easy flow of feelings and sensitivities to others.
Connected to family and particularly motherhood.
Harmony in relationships.
The play and variety of colors represent change as the beauty of existence.
Energies of Abalone are protection and emotional balance.
Usually found off the coasts of S. America, Japan, and China. Used by athletes to help build and protect muscle tissue. Also benefits the heart and helps in digestion. Nicknamed the sea ears, the Abalone’s flattened, oval shape with iridescent interior was used by the Native Northwest American Indians as a natural vessel for cleansing, offerings and prayers.

Abalone shells are often used for smudging ceremonies by the Native Americans in the United States and Canada.
The African green abalone shells shown above are edged and cleaned. They have been cleaned and polished on the inside; the outside is clean, but still rough. The sizes have been obtained by measuring the longest side of the shell.
The polished abalone shells have been highly polished to a beautiful sheen inside and out. It takes about four hours to polish one shell. These are beautiful decorative pieces or they can be used for inlay on rifle stocks, knives, and other items.
The difference between the mini African abalone shells, natural vs. bleached, is the bleached are a pearl white and the natural are more brown.
Dyed Abalone Shells
The shells are 4 - 7" (10 - 17.5 cm) from
front to back (longest side).

The coloring varies
from shell to shell. The females tend to be green and the males red.
The cleaning and edging of the African shells is far superior to what we have seen from the Mexican shells. Often, the Mexican shells are varnished as well. From what I have seen lately, I much prefer the African shells to the Mexican ones. For the polished shells, there is not much difference in quality
African Abalone Shell Buttons
These abalone shell buttons are made from Midas Abalone (Haliotis midae) in South Africa. The shells are a by-product of the food industry. This shell is also referred to as Midas Ear abalone or Perelman abalone.
It takes approximately 60 buttons to make an Abalone-Shell Necklace as demonstrated on Martha Stewart. Please Note: 100 of the 0.5" buttons must be ordered to fulfill the minimum order requirement if you are not ordering any other items.
The abalone shell buttons are about 1/16" in thickness. One of the advantages of the midas abalone is that the shells are thicker and result in less breakage than some other shell buttons, such as paua.

We are starting to offer ceramic tiles with
abalone shell tiles. These are ideal for trim in kitchens, bathrooms, or
for light-traffic residential floors. They are NOT recommended for
high-traffic flooring (as they will dull and scratch over time) or for areas
where intense heat may occur, such as near fireplaces or above range
hoods. They are also NOT recommended for use in or around pools where harsh
chemicals can harm them. Use liquid cleansers; do NOT clean with
abrasives. The tiles have a ceramic base with an ultraviolet resistant
coating that enhances the natural shell color. Because this is a natural
product, there will be slight variation in size, shade, and pattern. The
tiles should be installed using unsanded grout.
Custom sizes are available - see following section.
Two colors and three sizes are currently available. The thickness of 5/8 x 8" and 2 x 2" tiles is 1/4", while the 1-1/4 x 8" tile is 3/8" thick.

Abalone Shell Candles
We import double-wick abalone shell candles from South Africa that are wonderful party candles. These have been selling well in Europe and are just now coming to the United States. The natural holes along the edge of the shells have been plugged and the shells have been filled to the brim with wax that comes in a variety of scents. The candles come in a poly bag that is tied at the top with raffia and has a piece of dyed abalone shell for decoration. The shells are between 5" and 7" wide and 1.5" to 2" deep.
The Abalone Shell Candles come in a variety of scents, including sea breeze, lemon grass, citronella, lavender, cherry, vanilla, and jasmine. The candles will burn for about 11 hours.
The African green abalone shells we use have been edged and cleaned. They have been cleaned and polished on the inside; the outside is clean, but still rough. The shells can be cleaned and used for decoration once the wax is gone, re-filled with more wax, or used as a garden decoration or cactus planter.
